Digitally Enhanced Learning

Information and communication technology is an integral part of teaching and learning in Secondary division. Almost all learning material can be accessed online both within the school premises or elsewhere. Students are required to bring their laptop into the class as most of the work is done online. The use of this digital technology is closely supervised by the teachers to ensure students get the most benefit.

One notable digital platform that is currently used is the Managebac learning management system. This platform enables teachers to administer their teaching from planning, attendance checking to assessment and to communicate this to the students and parents accordingly. Students are able to receive and send messages, assignments and files from their teacher online. While parents can help monitoring their child’s learning progress, communicate with teachers and school authorities in a timely manner.

Turnitin, a plagiarism checker is actively used especially in the High School Division. Academic honesty is very crucial in our program. Beside teaching the students on how to authentically produce their work, Turnitin enables the teachers and students to get feedback on the originality of their work.

On top of those major platforms, there are many other subscribed learning system that the school applies to support the students learning such as Encyclopedia Britannica, an online library system, In-thinking for subjects support as well as many others.

The Role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Primary Years Programme (ECE and PS)

Making PYP Happen implicitly mentions that:

“…ICT provides opportunities for the transformation of teaching and learning and enables students to investigate, create, communicate, collaborate, organize and be responsible for their own learning and actions. ICT allows students to make connections and reach a deeper understanding of its relevance and applicability to their everyday lives. Through the use of ICT, learners develop and apply strategies for critical and creative thinking, engage in inquiry, make connections, and apply new understandings and skills in different contexts.”

To further explain  about technology in the PYP, it is stated that:

  •   It can document the learning, making it available to all parties
  •   It can provide opportunities for rapid feedback and reflection
  •   It can provide opportunities to enhance authentic learning
  •   It can provide access to a broad range of sources of information
  •   It can provide students with a range of tools to store, organize and present their learning
  •   It encourages and allows for communication with a wide-ranging audience.

This being stated, ICT in PYP includes a range of tools used to support teaching-learning activities in order for learners to build their own meaning and understanding. That is why in PYP, ICT is not merely a stand alone subject. ICT skills are taught in the classes to be used to enhance students’ learning and as alternatives to the non-digital methods they can choose to express themselves.

To use the skills, there are desktops in the ICT Lab, sets of MacBooks and iPads in mobile labs, a set of green screen studio tools, as well as microphones and headphones ready to be used in classrooms by teachers and students. Upper primary students are also allowed to bring their own device (laptop, tablet, digital camera, etc) when needed in certain subjects. This way, they have more opportunities in transforming their learning in digital ways. Below are lists of apps being used both in Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Primary School (PS):

  1.    Early Childhood Education (ECE):
  •   Camera (on iPad)

The camera is used by students both to take pictures and to record videos in order to record their learning journey. By taking pictures and recording videos, students document their understanding or show their learning processes.

  •   Photo Collage apps (Pic Collage, PicsArt)

These apps are used to either show list of things, compare pictures of objects being studied, etc. Sometimes, students also use these apps to show processes.

  •   Sock Puppets

This is a storytelling app being used by students to practice creating stories or role playing. The use of this app is hoped to help timid students who are reluctant to speak in whole class or in big group activities.

  •   Popplet

This simple chart creation app is used by students to show their understanding of different processes like how plants grow, how to cook simple food (guided by teachers), etc.

  •   Book Creator

Students use this app to create menus or catalogues, digitize their word bank as they study new words, or write a story book.

Different games are provided to help students as they learn the alphabet, numbers, and skills.

  1.    Primary School (PS)

KooBits, supports the development of Mathematics learning.

It is:

The objectives of having KooBits are to facilitate our students’ interest in gadgets as well as to improve their mathematical skills and interest.

❏     Seesaw

Seesaw is a digital portfolio app which enables students to record their journey, teachers to share students’ works as well as teachers’ inputs, and parents to get a glimpse of their children’s learning.

❏     BrainPop

Students can gain knowledge regarding Science, Reading comprehension and Language skills in an interactive way.

❏     Class Dojo

This app has a reward system to reinforce positive traits. Teachers can also use this app to communicate what happens in the classroom to parents.

❏     Sock Puppets

This is a storytelling app being used by students to practice creating stories or role playing.

❏     Trello

This is a worthwhile project management system that is both free and easy to operate. It’s a perfect app for group projects to manage what assignments to do, describe what the group is doing, and report what the group has done.

❏     Canva

This is an online design tool which you can use as an alternative to create posters, labels, flyers, infographics, and so many other things. Canva provides abundant templates, elements, backgrounds, and fonts. It’s easy to use.

❏     Book Creator

This is an app which facilitates students to write different things such as lifestyle journal, comic strip, visiting report, or storybook.  It has a unique platform that houses text, images, video and sound which allows students to be as imaginative as they wish to be as they create their e-book.

❏     Presentation Apps (Power Point, Keynote, Haiku, Google Slide, Explain Everything, Doceri, etc)

Since the beginning of their journey in primary school, students are introduced to different ways of presenting thoughts and ideas. They learn that there are more options out there and when they reach the upper level they can use the presentation app that they prefer.

❏     Video editing apps (iMovie, Clips, Movie Maker, Animoto, etc)

Students are introduced to video editing apps since grade 1 as they create their own simple videos. Using videos, they can express their own thoughts, record their own creation, or report their journey.

The lists are ever-growing as there is always something new students can learn to use.  In upper primary (grade 4-6), students are even encouraged to explore and/or use any apps they prefer in order to show their understanding.
